HISTORY AND SIGNIFICANCE OF KUMBH MELA

The Maha Kumbh Mela, an integral part of Indian tradition, is globally renowned as the largest peaceful gathering of people. A timeless tapestry of faith and fervor, this grand pilgrimage is held cyclically at four sacred riverbanks in India—Prayagraj (Allahabad) at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati; Haridwar along the Ganges; Nashik on the Godavari; and Ujjain on the Shipra. It is not merely a contemporary spectacle, but a tradition steeped in profound historical significance. The Rigveda speaks of a divine event called the “Sagar Manthan” or churning of the cosmic ocean, believed to be the origin of the Maha Kumbh Mela.

According to legend, during this cosmic churning, a pot (Kumbh) containing the elixir of immortality (amrita) emerged. A celestial battle for possession of this divine nectar ensued, lasting twelve divine days, which are equivalent to twelve human years. Drops of the nectar fell at four locations on Earth, marking the sites where the Kumbh Mela is celebrated today.

In the modern era, the Kumbh Mela has transformed into a global phenomenon, attracting millions of domestic pilgrims and garnering international attention. The recognition of the Kumbh Mela as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO in 2017 further emphasized its historical and cultural importance.

TYPES OF KUMBH MELA

Maha Kumbh Mela: It is held only in Prayagraj. It comes in every 144 years or after 12 Purna (Complete) Kumbh Mela.

Purna Kumbh Mela: It comes every 12 years. Mainly held at 4 Kumbh Mela Places in India i.e. Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik and Ujjain. It rotates every 12 years at these 4 places.

Ardh Kumbh Mela: It means Half Kumbh Mela which is held every 6 years in India only at two places i.e. Haridwar and Prayagraj.

Kumbh Mela: Held at four different places and is organised by the state governments. Millions of people participate with spiritual enthusiasm.

Magh Kumbh Mela: It is also known as Mini Kumbh Mela which is held annually and only at Prayagraj. It is organised in the month of Magh according to the Hindu Calendar.

IMPORTANT DATES OF SNAN AT KUMBH MELA

In the context of the Maha Kumbh Mela, “Shahi Snan” refers to the “royal bath. It signifies the ritualistic bathing of the devotees in the sacred waters of the river. The Shahi Snan holds immense significance as it is believed to cleanse one’s soul of all past sins and pave the way towards Moksha or liberation from the cycle of birth and death.

It is called a ‘royal’ bath because, on this day, the procession of the holy saints belonging to various Akharas (religious orders) to the bathing ghats is no less than a royal parade.

The timing of the Shahi Snan, or Royal Bath, is determined according to astrological calculations. The dates are considered to be astrologically significant and thus hold immense spiritual value. The belief is that bathing in the holy river at this time will not only cleanse one’s body but also purify the soul, leading the individual closer to attaining Moksha, or liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
